Just getting started? Please read our PDF Summary of the Proofreading Guidelines. Then select a project from the list below (It's best to begin a project marked "BEGINNERS ONLY" for a language in which you are proficient), read the Project Comments, and start proofreading.Once you've done a few pages you should read our Proofreading Guidelines and try our automated interactive Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial that provide immediate feedback. You might also find our Beginner's Guide to Navigating DP helpful.
What is P1 Page?
Proofreading Round 1 (P1) is the first round of proofreading. All new proofreaders start by working in this round. The link to this round appears at the top of all the Distributed Proofreading site pages as well as in the "Site Progress Snapshot" section of the Activity Hub.
This page includes a short explanation of the round, news items and a rule reminder.
When you scroll down the page, you'll come to the "Projects Currently Available" heading. In this section is a list of the books ready to be proofread in this round. You can sort the list by clicking on the table headers, although the links have been disabled in this walkthrough. A project filter will be available after you've proofread a few pages.
New volunteers are advised to start with a book marked BEGINNERS ONLY. These books are reviewed by mentors who'll send you detailed feedback and useful tips in a few days. After you have proofread some pages in this BEGINNERS ONLY project, while awaiting a mentor's reply you can get instant feedback by doing the Basic Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial. Also, please feel free to move on to other projects while you wait for their feedback. You may look for an EASY project or go straight to a HARD project if you want a challenge.
Before starting proofreading for the first time, new volunteers should read the Proofreading Guidelines PDF Summary or the Proofreading Guidelines which are available in our official documentation area. It's also a good idea to work through some of the Proofreading Quizzes and Tutorials. (For this walkthrough, only "*The Example" book is available to select.)
Once all the pages in a book have been proofread by volunteers in this P1 round, the book will proceed to the second round (P2) where more experienced volunteers will review the pages. By the time the book finishes proofreading and formatting, it will usually have gone through five rounds. As you gain experience and skill, you will be able to work in other rounds.
Simple Proofreading Rules
1) Don't rewrap lines. Leave the ends of lines where they are in the image.
a) except, please put words that are broken across lines back together.
2) Use a blank line before each paragraph and don't indent at the beginning of a paragraph.
3) Remove extra spaces around punctuation mistakenly inserted by the OCR software.
4) Don't correct the original spelling.
5) When in doubt, make it look like the original and use [** Notes for the next proofreader or PM would go here] to flag the spot.
TheProofreading Guidelines (for reference) provide much more detail.
BEGINNERS ONLY projects are reserved for new proofreaders. After you have done 5-15 pages in total from these projects, please leave them for proofreaders who are newer than you. EASY projects make a good next step.
